What is "sex?

Sex encompasses a range of meanings, broadly related to biological characteristics and behaviors associated with reproduction and pleasure.

  • Biological Sex: Refers to the chromosomal, hormonal, and anatomical differences between males and females. This is typically assigned at birth based on observable characteristics.

  • Sexual Activity: Encompasses various physical acts intended to produce sexual arousal and/or achieve orgasm, often involving intimate contact between individuals.

  • Sexual Reproduction: The process by which organisms create offspring through the fusion of gametes (sex cells).

  • Gender Identity: While distinct from biological sex, is also a related concept which refers to a person's internal sense of being male, female, both, neither, or another gender. It is important to note that sex and gender are distinct concepts.

  • Safe Sex: Practices implemented to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies during sexual activity.
